Star Wars 9 The Rise of Skywalker NEW photos, characters, planets PLUS first look at Luke

Aside from the first trailer being launched at Star Wars Celebration, there’s been no official footage or additional pictures released for The Rise of Skywalker until now. Today Vanity Fair have released stunning new snaps and set photos by Annie Leibovitz, who similarly captured actors for The Last Jedi. The two main covers feature new looks at Rey, all in white, and Kylo Ren, all in black. The two characters appear to be in the desert setting from the first teaser trailer, which was captured in Jordan’s Wadi Rum valley.

A picture of Jordanian locals playing the Aki-Aki, seems to confirm l this desert planet as being called Pasaana.

Aside from the covers, it’s also been confirmed as rumoured that the Knights of Ren are back.

What exactly their role will be remains a mystery after they only featured in Rey’s Force-back vision in The Force Awakens when she held Luke’s blue lightsaber.

Meanwhile, as suspected, Keri Russell plays “masked scoundrel” Zorri Bliss, with her picture set on the snow-dusted world of Kijimi by a Thieves’ Quarters.

Also, Richard E Grant – who was rumoured to be a First Order officer – plays Allegiant General Pryde opposite Domhnall Gleeson’s General Hux.

Intriguingly, there’s a shot of Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker with R2-D2 surrounded by flames.

With no Force ghost blue glow and the similarity of this shot with ones in The Force Awakens, our best bet is this from that very flashback moment.

Crucially, we learn from the article that The Rise of Skywalker is set a year after the events of The Last Jedi, confirming the suspected time jump.

Director JJ Abrams certainly feels challenged at ending not just the sequel trilogy, but the whole Skywalker saga.

FIRST VERDICT ON RISE OF SKYWALKER

He said: “That’s the challenge of this movie.

“It wasn’t just to make one film that as a stand-alone experience would be thrilling, and scary, and emotional, and funny.

“But one that if you were to watch all nine of the films, you’d feel like, Well, of course—that!”

Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker is released in UK cinemas on December 19, 2019.
