Former Top Gear host Richard Hammond, 51, has apologised for his cheeky remark about a fan’s car manufacturer, when he discovered it had broken down. Richard was called out on the jibe when he appeared on Scott Mills and Chris Stark’s BBC Radio 5 Live show on Saturday morning, to chat about his new Amazon Prime show The Great Escapists.

Chris took the opportunity to share a story his wife, Ria, who is a big fan of Richard, had told him about when they bumped into each other outside Silverstone.

The BBC Radio 1 star explained that Ria’s car had broken down at the time and Richard had spotted all the commotion and approached her vehicle.

Recalling the funny story on-air, Chris said: “Richard, my wife is very excited that you’re on the show today.

“She told me this story that she was working at Silverstone and she was a huge fan of yours.

“So she’s broken down in her Peugeot 206, and it’s broken down by Silverstone, and the call out people are there.

“And you’ve seen that there’s a bit of fuss going on, and you’ve asked her, ‘What’s going on there?’ And she says, ‘My car’s broken down.’

“And you looked at her and said, ‘Yeah… that’s what you’re going to get with a Peugeot,’ and then you got into your helicopter!”

Richard initially admitted he didn’t remember the incident, but joked the moment sounded “epic”.

He burst into laughter and exclaimed: “I did not, did I? That’s great if I did I’d love to think if I did!”

“It’s a weird thing for her to make up,” Chris remarked.

He then went on to insist that despite the snub, his other half loves Richard even more for his antics.

Chris added: “She loves you for it!”

Richard continued: “I’m going to say that I did, that sounds very cool!

“I said, ‘That’s what you get with a Peugeot?’ Epic!”

Scott then chimed: “It is true though, she does love you more for it.”

“Oh good,” Richard replied.

“Into the helicopter though, what a look!” Chris laughed.

Richard then apologetically responded: “Oh, I’m sorry about that!”

Elsewhere, Richard has claimed that he “jinxed” his 2017 The Grand Tour accident, which saw him airlifted to hospital after crashing his supercar at 288mph.

Talking about the smash which saw his Rimac Concept One supercar go up in flames, Richard admitted it was a complete accident, telling the An Hour With podcast: “I didn’t do it on purpose and I’m not going to do it again.”

He continued: “Although, weirdly, we hadn’t long been having a conversation [that] it was going that way anyway, maybe it accelerated it.”
