Matthew Wolfenden teased his wife Charley Webb’s return to Emmerdale on Tuesday’s episode of This Morning.

The actor, 41 , who plays David Metcalfe on the soap, appeared on the ITV chatshow to discuss Meena Jutla's explosive murder storyline – where he appeared to accidentally let slip that his character survives.

Yet chat soon turned to whether his wife Charley, 33, who plays Debbie Dingle, would be returning to Emmerdale anytime soon.

Charley has played the character of Debbie on the ITV show since 2002 and she made a brief return to the Yorkshire village over Christmas following her maternity leave after welcoming her youngest son Ace in 2019.

Talking about a potential return, Matthew said that Charley will likely wait until Covid restrictions are dropped before making another comeback – as current filming regulations can be “tough”.

He said: “She went back for 10 weeks over Christmas for a big storyline, it’s to be honest… filming there at the minute with Covid regulations, it’s tough, really tough…”

Talking about filming scenes with Paige Sandhu, who plays Meena on the soap, Matthew continued: “Setting up [on-screen] relationship, more than 2 metres apart with masks on is difficult, everyone rallied round to make it what it is.

“I think she [Charley] will be going back when all this has happened, think she will wait until restrictions are dropped.”

Matthew also discussed his past gymnastics journey, revealing that he trained from the age of four and was even part of the British squad.

However, after fracturing two vertebrae in his back, it ended his career before getting into the Olympic standard. Reflecting on his past career, Matthew said: “Things happen for a reason, if I hadn’t done that, I would not be here today… everything snowballed because of that accident.”

The actor also revealed that his eldest son Buster, 11, sweetly said: “Dad, if you had never had that accident, I wouldn’t be here today because you would have never of met mum…”

Elsewhere during the interview, Matthew appeared to let slip his character’s fate in Meena’s explosive murder storyline.

It was revealed last month by the soap’s producer Kate Brooks that Meena would be part of a “gripping” new storyline where a major character would be killed off. This week, viewers will discover who the evil nurse’s first victim is with the episodes available to watch now on the ITV Hub ahead of their air date.

Despite insisting that he “can’t tell” This Morning hosts Holly Willoughby or Phillip Schofield who is killed, Matthew accidentally revealed his own character’s fate.

Matthew was asked about fans’ theories surrounding the storyline after they speculated that David could team up with Meena to help her with the murders. To which he accidentally let slip: “Erm… I like the idea, I don’t think it will happen. The trouble with murdering on a soap, it can’t last very long on there.

“You can’t be a serial killer or right hand man without a sticky end… I hope that doesn’t happen!”

To which host Phillip exclaimed: "He’s not dead! You fell into that one, not us!"

With a giggling Matthew replying: "I’m sorry Emmerdale press team, I tried!"

Teasing the actor later on the show Phillip said: “We know you’re safe!” to which his co-host Holly pointed out: "Maybe… he’s an actor, it could be a massive double bluff!"

It comes after Emmerdale fans were left in shock over Meena’s first murder victim after new episodes, which are yet to be aired on television, were released to the ITV Hub on Monday.
