As a comedian, Dave Chapelle has risen to become one of the most well-known names in his field – mostly due to his Comedy Central sketch series, Chapelle's Show.
Throughout his controversial career, he has always had the backing of his wife of 20 years, Elaine Mendoza Erfe Chappelle.
Previously, Dave has praised the sheer dedication and support his wife has given him through thick and thin, one prime example being when he stepped down from the Chappelle's Show in 2006 after experiencing a variety of personal issues.
Speaking to Howard Stern a few years ago, Dave explained: "My wife, if it gets real bad, she’ll let me know, like, ‘Oh, you should look into this.’ But for the most part, I try not to pay attention to it because you don’t want to be careful as a comedian."
He added: "I try to keep my business small enough so it can still be authentic enough."
Here's a look into Dave Chapelle's long and colourful relationship with Elaine Mendoza Erfe Chappelle, and all the ups and downs they have experienced together…
Who is Elaine and how did she meet Dave?
Elaine was born to Filipino parents in 1974 , making her one year younger than the comedian. She reportedly once hoped to become a professional chef before devoting all her time to her three kids Sulayman, Ibrahim and daughter Sanaa.
Dave previously told Howard Stern that he met his wife in Brooklyn.
Reportedly, one of the toughest situations their marriage faced was in the mid-2000s when he famously fled to South Africa during the peak of his career.
At the time, there was a whirlwind of rumours surrounding why he fled including mental health issues and substance abuse – although he has never confirmed this.
He also cancelled a $50 million contract with Comedy Central to continue the show, something his wife was not happy about.
"My wife's still a little salty…she's not mad at me, but don't think you're going to walk away from $50 million and your wife's just gonna be cool with it," he told Conan O'Brien in 2006.
Where is the Chappelle family now?
Currently, Chappelle and his wife live in the outskirts of the small town of Yellow Springs in Ohio – which contains a moderately small population of 3,500.
Yellow Springs holds significance for Mr Chappelle as he spent a lot of his childhood there while his father was a dean of students and professor of vocal performance at Antioch College.
Last year, he announced interest in returning to Africa inspired by Stevie Wonder.
"‘I am moving to Ghana so that I can be valued and respected more," he told Naomi Campbell on her podcast.
