Dominic West and his wife Catherine FitzGerald have wished followers a happy Christmas with a family picture, two months after the actor’s relationship with Lily James hit headlines.
Dominic, 51, Catherine, 49, and their four children gathered in the grounds of their Irish home Glin Castle for a message of season’s greetings from the castle’s official social media account.
The picture saw Dominic and Catherine separated by their eldest daughter Dora, 14, with Senan, 12, Francis, 11, and seven-year-old Christabel standing in front of a stone wall and woodland floiage.
The caption on the snap read: ‘Happy Christmas from Glin Castle!’
While the spaced out picture may look like the West clan were socially distancing from each other, the picture was actually taken for a feature in Town and Country magazine in January 2019.
In the feature, Dominic discussed his first time at the historic castle, which has been in Catherine’s family for 800 years.
Explaining that he first met his wife when they studied at Trinity College, The Affair star said: ‘Everyone was in love with her. I went out with her for a few weeks until she dumped me, then held a candle for the next 20 years until we found each other again. I first came to Glin for Catherine’s 21st birthday party – it was an awful experience because all her other boyfriends showed up as well.
‘After we got back together, all those years later, I remember having a terrible feeling when I eventually returned, probably from my memories of youthful rejection. It was quite overwhelming; I remember fleeing up into the woods, behind the house, and just thinking, “Christ, I don’t belong here”.
‘But despite the inauspicious start, I’ve been coming here with the kids pretty much every school holiday for the last decade. I now see myself as the Basil Fawlty of Limerick.’
Catherine’s father Desmond Fitzgerald was the 29th Black Knight and upon his death aged 74 in 2011, the family decided to sell Glin Castle.
However, the castle didn’t sell, and the couple decided to keep the castle in the family and offer it as a venue for luxury rentals, film shoots and weddings, charging from €7,000 a night during high season.
The castle has 15 en suite bedrooms, a church, its own pub and stunning gardens.
The family promo for the Irish castle comes after Dominic’s personal life came under the spotlight back in October.
The star was pictured in Rome with fellow actor Lily James, 31, with the stars pictured canoodling and getting close on a scooter.
After the pictures emerged, Dominic flew back to the UK – wearing the same clothes as he had been wearing with Lily – and posed for a much-mocked show of defiance with his wife of 10 years outside their Wiltshire home.
Dominic and Catherine kissed and put their arms around each other in front of the paps, as well as producing a handwritten note reading: ‘Our marriage is strong and we are very much still together. Thank you’, followed by both West and FitzGerald’s signatures.
Lily never addressed the pictures, and pulled out of a scheduled appearance on The Graham Norton Show to promote her film Rebecca just days later.
Dominic and Lily will be seen together in the BBC adaptation of The Pursuit Of Love, in which they play uncle and niece.
