Cynthia Erivo Transforms Into Aretha Franklin In New ‘Genius: Aretha’ Trailer

A new trailer for “Genius: Aretha” released on Tuesday (February 9), shows Cynthia Erivo proclaiming, “I’mma let that Queen thing go wherever I want it to,” as she transforms into Aretha Franklin in National Geographic‘s upcoming anthology series.

“Genius: Aretha” provides insight into the Queen of Soul’s legendary career. The short two-minute clip also features moments with Aretha’s preacher father Rev. C.L. Franklin, portrayed by Courtney B. Vance. Malcolm Barrett and David Cross also star in the series.

The trailer shows Erivo singing the icon’s 1968 hit, “Chain of Fools,” right through the duration.

“I’m writing a new song, it’s gonna hit you hard,” she says in a voiceover. “It will get under your skin, right down to the bone. It’s gonna be a whole new vibe that brings people together.”

“There will never be another one like me,” Cynthia Erivo’s Aretha Franklin declares in the final moments of the new trailer.

National Geographic noted in a press release that the season will “explore Aretha Franklin’s musical genius and incomparable career, as well as the immeasurable impact and lasting influence she has had on music and culture around the world.”

“Genius: Aretha” will premiere over four consecutive nights, beginning Sunday, March 21 at 9 p.m. ET. The episodes will become available to stream on Hulu on March 25, which would have been Franklin’s 79th birthday.
