EDEN CONFIDENTIAL: Archbishop of Canterbury says his ‘father’ was an anti-Semite who ‘wouldn’t let me play with Jews’
The Archbishop of Canterbury has revealed the man he thought was his father was an anti-Semite who told him not to make friends with Jews.
The Most Rev Justin Welby says he fell foul of Gavin Welby after he became friendly with a Jewish boy called Myers at boarding school.
‘My father heard about this,’ the archbishop says. ‘He said, ‘Don’t play with him — he’s Jewish’.’
Speaking at a London synagogue, Welby adds: ‘I still remember, I must have been nine, thinking, ‘I am not going to obey that. He is my friend. So what if he is Jewish? I couldn’t care less’.’
A 2016 DNA test revealed the archbishop’s biological father was Winston Churchill’s ex-private secretary, Sir Anthony Montague Browne.

Strictly, it’s a rave, Vick tells parents!
Vick Hope may have appeared on Strictly Come Dancing — but the TV presenter’s not the only member of her family who’s got the moves.
The Cambridge graduate’s parents, Adeline Nwosu and Nigel Hope, joined her at an outdoor rave in Spain (pictured), where Vick’s fiance, Calvin Harris, is a superstar DJ. ‘Mum and dad came to Ibiza, discovered ‘the drop’ and things were never the same again,’ she jokes, referring to the point in a record where there’s a sudden rhythm change.
She tells me: ‘I love Ibiza — it’s my second home, it’s the best place in the world. It’s about enjoying the music.’

The much-hyped new Barbie film, starring Margot Robbie, has won over most critics, but it’s left architect and TV presenter Dara Huang disappointed. Dara, the mother of Princess Beatrice’s stepson, Wolfie, is sad there is no prominent Asian Barbie in the film. Ritu Arya, a British actress of Indian heritage, has a tiny role, and Dara complains: ‘Guys, where is the Asian Barbie?’ Dara, 40, was born and grew up in America. Her maternal grandfather had emigrated there from Taiwan. She hopes there’ll be a Barbie sequel, in which she could appear and jokes: ‘Can I audition for the typical studious, professional Asian Barbie, but then twist in single mum and dress in all black?’

You might want to cancel your summer break in the Med if you hear about pop star Beverley Craven’s holiday from hell in Greece. The singer, 59, who’s best known for her hit Promise Me, reveals: ‘I got a nasty bite on my elbow and ended up having to have a steroid injection (in my bottom).’ And that wasn’t the end of her woes on the island of Cephalonia. ‘My legs and feet swelled ridiculously in the heat and I managed to burn my legs quite badly on the beach,’ she adds. ‘I won’t be posting those pics.’
